CONNIE WINTERS
Connie Winters has emerged as a strong influence on the art scene in the Southeastern United States. Citing the work of classic French Impressionists as an ongoing source of inspiration in her own artwork, Winters naturally gravitates to France, particularly the rural regions of Provence and Dordogne, as locations for her landscapes. Winters travels to France each year, crediting the provincial lifestyle she experiences there with giving her a renewed sense of spirituality and desire to create her detailed and vibrant landscapes. Her approach to thecanvas is that of active observer, intent on recording the interplay of color and light as it unfolds in each scene. Through her energetic interpretations of nature and local color, Winters uses the canvas to convey her own enthusiasm to the viewer.
JANE SCHMIDT
Inspired by abstract expressionists, Jane Schmidt uses the subject of landscape to explore the edge between abstraction and representation with an emphasis on the expressive use of color. Using decisive brush marks, Schmidt commingles vibrant colors to create a visual experience for every viewer.
Schmidt earned a Master of Fine Arts from Arizona State University and has many accolades to her credit. She was chosen 2005 Emerging Artist by Phoenix Home and Garden Magazine, and selected to exhibit at 2007 Florence Biennale, Florence Italy. The Florence Biennale is a premier world art event where artists from around the world are chosen by a panel of art critics and historians to exhibit and compete.
ANGELA NESBIT
Angela Nesbit effortlessly captures light, movement, and texture in a brief yet poignant blur of childhood. Although Nesbit’s energy is most easily identifiable in her child figures, she maintains the same style when approaching landscapes and still-lifes, using fewer strokes to retain more energy and emotion in her subjects, whether they are children, flowers, or hillsides. Settled amid thick layers of paint, her simple subjects wander softly in and out of the background.
Nesbit received a B.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and studied classical drawing and painting at Queens University and Spirit Square Center for the Arts in Charlotte, N.C.
ROGER DALE BROWN
Originally from Nashville, Tennessee oil painter Roger Brown traveled and studied across the country. These experiences in addition to history, the natural world and architecture inspire his acclaimed oil paintings. Brown paints en plein air and has painted scenes across the country including still lifes and cityscapes.
Brown’s artistic goal is to capture the essence of location, to make a viewer feel the color of the trees and the sun on a field. Brown’s work is displayed in galleries across the country including the Oil Painters of America National Juried Exhibition, the Tennessee Art League, The Central South Juried Show and the Hendersonville Artist Guild.
KATHY SOSA
Influenced by Modigliani and Matisse, Kathy Sosa is known for her mixed media portraiture – collage of oils and interior textiles and wallpapers. Sosa has created a very recognizable style with her strong decorative elements and bold use of color.
A student of the renowned portrait artist Nelson Shanks, Kathy Sosa was commissioned by the Texas Conference of Women to paint design icon Martha Stewart and she presented it to her personally. Sosa has gained widespread recognition with her Huipiles Series which was a part of an exhibition at the Smithsonian Latino Center in Washington DC and the Museo Alameda in San Antonio, Texas.
VERONICA CLARK
New works by North Carolina artist, Veronica Clark will be exhibited in a one-woman show at the Shain Gallery. The exhibit will be on view from September 19 through October 2, 2008.
Born in Sussex and growing up in the English countryside, Veronica has lived and studied in London, Paris and Florence. Since 1981, she has resided in the Carolinas. Most recently she spends time between Charlotte and a family farm in Chester, SC where her studio overlooks fields with cows which are often the subject of her paintings. Horses, dogs, chickens and geese also provide much inspiration, as do the animals she meets on her travels.
Veronica completed two weeks at the American Academy of Equine Art in Lexington, Kentucky, studying under Lesley Humphrey. She has also attended workshops with George Strickland, Scott Burdick, Steve Early and Dawn Emerson.
Veronica has exhibited and won awards in local and regional shows, with work in collections across the United States and in Europe. Recently, Veronica had her work accepted in the American Academy of Equine Art, a juried show in Lexington Kentucky, and in 2008, she was the official artist for Charlotte’s Queens Cup Steeplechase.
JIM CHAPMAN
One cannot help but notice the obvious delight that Jim Chapman takes in creating his paintings. Chapman studied at Appalachian State University under John Groth, of the Art Students League, as well as William Dunlap, Warren Dennis and Noyes Long. He has completed projects for the North Carolina Department of Tourism as well as several private commissions. His works can be seen in the collections of Wachovia, Raycom, Bank of America, FDIC and RJR-Nabisco. Jim Chapman’s bright and intense landscape and still life images evoke a playful and intense appreciation for color, form and technique. Mr. Chapman has developed a highly personal, unique style while addressing the traditional subject matter of still life and landscape. His palette is an inspired variation on Post-Impressionism color theory combined with a keen observation of the natural world. Indeed, his richly textured paintings are a feast for the eyes.
HENRY BARNES
Atlanta artist, Henry Barnes captures European and Southeastern landscapes with his original use of color and light. His unique blue/green palettes seem to defy possibility by reading warm and cool at the same time, resulting in an unmatched serenity and a distinct and instantly recognizable style.
His success in translating light into various times of day or night is always a great source of interest for all. With numerous solo shows, Barnes has been collected by many notable private and corporate collections such as Bell South and Wachovia.
WILLIAM JAMESON

While in college he studied at the Instituto Allende, San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuanto, Mexico. His graduate work in graphics and sculpture brought him stateside to the Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, FL
While in New York, his paintings were used in the Woody Allen films “Manhattan” and “Interiors”. Jameson and his remarkable oil paintings of nature have appeared in a dozen publications over his career. He instructs artists in painting workshops he leads in Provence, France; Tuscany, Italy; San Miguel de Allende, Mexico; Blowing Rock, NC and Charleston SC.
ALICE WILLIAMS
At first glance, one might categorize the art of Alice Williams as post-impressionist, but it would be unfair to confine her career to one genre. True, she is interested in color and light as Bonnard and Vuillard were, but in addition, she is just as fascinated by good composition and canvas narrative. Her paintings show the influence of having grown up surrounded by fine art. Living and painting in Europe for five years, she had the opportunity to study the masters as she frequented museums, especially the Louvre and the Musee d’Orsay, which were within walking distance of her Paris home. She also spent years studying under such well-known painters as Chatov, Shank, Kinstler and portraitist Green. A prolific painter, her brushstrokes denote the bravado of a master and her experience shows. Her remarkable versatility of subject matter, her use of dynamic color and the beautiful effect of chiaroscuro present in her paintings are just a few of the many qualities that make her easily one of the most recognizable and sought after painters in America today.
